Unit 1: Investigation and Experimentation
Collaborative Wiki

This unit focuses on Investigation and Experimentation. Our ultimate focus in this unit is "How to create the perfect science fair project." Through activities, teacher demonstrations, and labs, we will be working on how to write a GOOD hypothesis, writing a GOOD set of procedures, creating a well designed experiment, collecting quantitative data, graphing the quantitative data, analyzing the data, and writing a good conclusion. Although you do not have a mandatory science fair project, we will have a culminating project, which will be a group science fair project, the rubber band trajectory project.
8th Grade Science Standards Covered:
Scientific progress is made by asking meaningful questions and conducting careful investigations. As a basis for understanding this concept and addressing the content in the other three strands, students should develop their own questions and perform investigations. Students will:
- Plan and conduct a scientific investigation to test a hypothesis.
- Evaluate the accuracy and reproducibility of data.
- Distinguish between variable and controlled parameters in a test.
- Construct appropriate graphs from data and develop quantitative statements about the relationships between variables.
